In Wisconsin, the Old Fashioned isn’t just a cocktail — it’s a state tradition. Whether you prefer brandy or bourbon, muddled fruit or none at all, Middleton has plenty of spots mixing up versions that honor the classic while adding a touch of their own flavor.

Here are some of the best places to sip an Old Fashioned in Middleton.

Craftsman Table & Tap
Craftsman Old Fashioned, Espresso Old Fashioned & A Lyre’s Old Fashioned

Craftsman Table & Tap offers a lineup of Old Fashioneds to suit every taste. The Craftsman Old Fashioned features Redemption Rye, Angostura and orange bitters, demerara sugar and a touch of orange. The Espresso Old Fashioned is a brunch special that brings a caffeinated twist with Maker’s Mark bourbon, espresso, demerara and El Guapo Coffee Pecan Bitters. For a zero-proof option, A Lyre’s Old Fashioned uses Lyre’s American Malt with muddled orange and cherries, topped with seltzer for a refreshing, spirit-free take on the original.

1847 at the Stamm House
Barrel Aged Old Fashioned

Nothing is more Wisconsin than an Old Fashioned at a supper club. 1847 at the Stamm House serves a Barrel Aged Old Fashioned with Berens Old Fashioned Brandy, Angostura bitters, Italian maraschino cherries, and fresh oranges, which pair perfectly with the supper club experience and even better with Stamm House's famous truffle fries.

Nitty Gritty
Spiced Pear Old Fashioned

Nitty Gritty puts a flavorful spin on with a Spiced Pear Old Fashioned. St. George Spiced Pear Liqueur blends with brown sugar and Angostura bitters, while orange and cherry add a bright touch. A cinnamon stick garnish brings everything together for a smooth, lightly spiced sip.

The Free House Pub
Barrel Aged Old Fashioned & Barrel Aged Up Fashioned

This Barrel Aged Old Fashioned starts with Free House’s own select Sazerac Rye, muddled oranges and Traverse City cherries. After steeping in a barrel for three days, it’s strained and served up with an orange swath and cherry garnish.

For a bolder take, the Barrel Aged Up Fashioned switches it up with Redemption Rye and bitters, keeping the same muddled Traverse City cherries and oranges and serving it straight up in a martini glass.

The Free House Pub also keeps the celebration going with Old Fashioned Friday — enjoy $2 off any Old Fashioned, all night long.

Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant
PB&J Old Fashioned

Cooper’s Hawk puts a playful spin on the PB&J Old Fashioned. This creative cocktail mixes Whistle Pig 6-Year Bourbon with Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey and chocolate bitters, finished with an Amarena cherry and orange. A sidecar of Cooper Hawk's sweet red wine adds a smooth, jam-like note that ties the flavors together perfectly.

The Village Green
Wisconsin Bourbon Old Fashioned & Everywhere Else Old Fashioned

Neither of Village Green's Old Fashioneds holds back from a heavy-handed pour. The Wisconsin Bourbon Old Fashioned features locally made J. Henry & Son’s Wisconsin small-batch bourbon, Angostura bitters, simple syrup, and of course, what makes it a Wisconsin Old Fashioned, a splash of lemon-lime soda. The Everywhere Else Old Fashioned keeps it strong with Buffalo Trace bourbon, Angostura bitters and simple syrup, served without a mixer for a bold, full-bodied drink.

Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano
Old World Old Fashioned

Biaggi’s Old World Old Fashioned blends Maker’s Mark Bourbon with Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur and bitters. A caramelized orange and Amarena cherry garnish add depth and a touch of sweetness.

Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse
Maple Bacon Old Fashioned & Johnny’s Old Fashioned Moscow Mule

Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse serves two standout Old Fashioneds. The Maple Bacon Old Fashioned combines Knob Creek Maple Bourbon with candied bacon to contrast the sweet with savory. Can't decide between an Old Fashioned or Moscow Mule? Have both in one drink with Johnny’s Old Fashioned Moscow Mule. This combines brandy or bourbon with bitters, ginger beer and lime juice for a refreshing, lightly spiced drink with a citrusy finish.

Villa Dolce
Villa Dolce Old Fashioned

The Villa Dolce Old Fashioned elevates the game with an unexpected flavor profile. Buffalo Trace bourbon pairs with Giffard Banane du Brésil (banana liqueur) and black walnut bitters, creating a smooth, nutty and subtly sweet cocktail with a hint of tropical warmth.

TeslaCon Steampunk Convention Set in Middleton https://visitmiddleton.com/teslacon-steampunk-convention-set-in-middleton/ Mon, 03 Nov 2025 15:05:25 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=33702

MIDDLETON, WI — The largest Steampunk convention in North America will take over a Middleton hotel in early November and everyone’s invited to the party.

TeslaCon — as in Nikola Tesla — begins Thursday, Nov. 6, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Madison Marriott West-Middleton. This is the convention’s 15th year and attracts vendors and attendees nationwide. And as an added bonus this year, Emily Kuhn, the City of Middleton’s mayor, has agreed to be in its fashion show.

TeslaCon is an immersive experience and this year’s convention, “Tear of Odin,” brings fairies, folklore, Nordic legends and yes, gnomes, to life with four days of programming. There will also be a Saturday night dance and themed dinner. Tickets will be on sale at the door and visitors can purchase a daily pass, weekend pass or family pass — cash only.

The fashion show will be at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, in the ballroom at the Marriott. There are two categories, Trashion — upcycle/old wedding dress/thrifting/altered garments; and Merry Makers of Middleton — show-stopper pieces worn by the creator. Mayor Kuhn will walk the runway with the vendors’ collections. The fashion show also includes a comedy sketch and an audience-participation production of “Time Warp” from “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

“As you can see, my fashion shows are a production of fashion, entertainment, comedy, audience interactions, games and prizes,” said Chris Piehler, fashion show organizer and vendor who drives from New Jersey to attend this event. “It’s not your grandma’s fashion show.”

The Middleton Visitors Center was given 100 FREE tickets to give to Middleton residents, which gains free access to the convention (one or all four days!). These tickets are first-come-first-serve, no reservations, holds or mailings. Stop by the Middleton Visitors Center at 1811 Parmenter Street (within the historic train depot downtown) to pick up tickets; open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Wednesday, Nov. 3-5, and closed Thursday-Friday, as the team will be at a conference.

More details about TeslaCon are available here  www.teslacon.com.

A Middleton Guide to Badger Game Day https://visitmiddleton.com/badger-game/ Fri, 03 Oct 2025 20:50:14 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=33020

Badger gamedays bring an energy all their own. Whether it’s the sea of red, the traditions inside Camp Randall, or the cheers from fans across the state, there’s nothing quite like it. For visiting fans, staying in Middleton offers competitive rates, proximity to Camp Randall Stadium (15-20 minutes away from any of the nine hotels), and a great leisure destination to extend their stay. And if you’d rather cheer from a barstool, the city has no shortage of bars and restaurants showing every play.

Watch the Game Right Here in Middleton

Not every fan needs a ticket to Camp Randall to get in on the Badger gameday excitement. While Middleton has plenty of spots to cheer on Wisconsin with fellow fans, enjoy food and drinks and soak up the energy of game day at one of these local sports bars here. Below are some first-string game day spots.

    Free House Pub

Free House Pub is a must-visit for football fans. During weekend game days, enjoy $12 pitchers of select beers, party platter specials and custom cocktails like Baldi the Badger. This year, Free House launched the Football Club Punch Card, available Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. Collect punches for each visit and once the card is complete, receive a $20 Free House gift card and entry into a grand prize raffle for one of two postseason parties. Winners will enjoy a private room to watch the College Football Playoff or NFL Divisional Round Weekend games, a $150 bar tab and an open invite to bring as many friends as they’d like.

    Craftsman Table & Tap

Craftsman Table & Tap keeps the fun flowing with game day specials like 3 Sheep’s Armchair Quarterback pints for $6 throughout football season. Plus, two large screen TVs conveniently located right at the bar.

    Middleton Sport Bowl

Middleton Sport Bowl is another fan favorite, with massive TVs everywhere you turn and a shuttle to the stadium, making it easy to enjoy the game and still feel a part of the downtown action. Plus, customers can enjoy football specials like $4 brats and hot dogs, 16oz domestic beer buckets for $16 and free Jell-O shots on Badger touchdowns.

A yellow school bus with an extended stop sign is parked outside a building. A person inside is waving, and the bus displays the number 2881, ready to begin its Spring itinerary.
    Middleton Sport Bowl Badger Shuttle

    The Camp Randall Experience

Thinking about catching the game live? Here’s everything you need to know to get there, join the pregame fun and celebrate like a true Badger fan.

    Getting to the Stadium

Heading to Camp Randall from Middleton is a 15- to 20-minute drive on non-game days, though gameday traffic adds some time. Luckily, fans have several convenient ways to get downtown:

    By Car

While there is some street parking available, many areas around Camp Randall rent out parking lots and driveways during the football season. Arriving early (at least three hours before kickoff) can help you find the best spots and sometimes even the rare and highly sought-after free parking spot. Regardless of where you park, expect to walk at least a few blocks to the stadium. But with grills sizzling, music blasting and tailgates spilling into the streets, the walk feels more like a pregame parade.

    By Rideshare/Taxi

Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft make it easy to get to the stadium without worrying about parking. Plan for slightly longer wait times on game days and expect surge pricing. Or schedule your trip by taxi with Madison Taxi or Union Cab of Madison.

Person in a UW Badger mascot costume wearing a red-and-white striped shirt and red shoes, sitting on a metal chair outdoors with trees and buildings in the background, ready to cheer on the football team.

    By Shuttle

Shuttles are a great way to skip downtown traffic, and with fellow Badger supporters all around you, they’re also one of the most spirited and stress-free ways to get to the stadium.

    Middleton Sport Bowl Shuttle

Located right here in Middleton, this shuttle runs to all Wisconsin Badger football and basketball home games. Tickets are $10 per rider, round-trip, and you’ll be dropped off right at the stadium. The bus leaves the bar one hour before the start of the game and heads back 20-30 minutes after the game ends. Reserve your spot by calling 608-831-5238.

    Bucky Shuttle

If you’d rather drive part of the way but still avoid the hassle of finding a parking spot and the worst of the traffic, park in lots 60, 64, or 76 near the UW campus and hop on the Bucky Shuttle to Camp Randall. Passes must be purchased in advance (here) and cost $10 per person round-trip. Shuttles run every 15 minutes starting two hours before kickoff and continue up to an hour after the game, dropping you right by the stadium entrance.

    By Bus

Middleton is served by the F and R Metro Transit bus lines, both of which can connect you to downtown Madison and Camp Randall. Keep in mind: these details are for weekend routes, which differ from weekday service. Use Metro Transit's real-time tracker to plan your trip.

For the most straightforward option, ride Route R to downtown Madison with no transfers and get off at University at N. Breese for a short walk to the stadium. Staying on for two more stops will drop you at W. Johnson at N. Orchard, steps from Union South’s Badger Bash and just a short walk from Regent Street tailgating.

Route F loops around the outside of Middleton and connects with Madison’s new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line. Take the F to Sheboygan at N. Segoe, ask your driver for a transfer pass, then cross to the median to board the A Line. With just four stops, you’ll reach downtown quickly. Get off at the Orchard stop and either walk down N. Camp Randall Ave to the stadium or head down Orchard to Regent Street or Union South for tailgating.

    Accessibility at Camp Randall

Camp Randall Stadium offers several options to help all fans enjoy game day.

    • Drop-Offs: University Avenue and Breese Terrace, and Randall Street near Monroe Street. Golf cart or wheelchair escorts are available through guest services.
    • Gates: Gates 1, 3, 7 and 10 have no stairs.
    • Golf Cart Service: Complimentary rides from Breese Terrace and University Avenue (preferred), Lot 17, or Randall and Monroe.
    • Seating: Wheelchair and easy access options available.
    • Assistive Listening: FM headsets available at guest services in the south endzone concourse.
A crowded football stadium bursts with fans in red, a game in progress on the field, and “WISCONSIN” marked in an end zone—a perfect Spring highlight on any sports lover’s itinerary.
A man, woman, and toddler stand together outdoors at a football tailgate event, all wearing casual red and white clothing and sunglasses. People and red tents are visible in the background, capturing the excitement of game day.

    Tailgating Tips and Top Spots

No Badger gameday is complete without a tailgate. Here are some fan favorites for a memorable tailgating experience:

Badger Bash Tailgate Party at Union South
Just steps from Camp Randall, Badger Bash kicks off two and a half hours before every home game. This free, family-friendly event offers food, drinks and entertainment both indoors and out. Enjoy tunes from the Badger Band, grab free goodies on Orchard Street, or simply soak up the lively tailgate atmosphere. The Union has hosted this beloved event since 1972, welcoming fans from all teams.

    Fabiola’s Spaghetti House & Deli
Continuing a tradition started by Rocky Rococo founder Roger Brown in 1998, Fabiola’s hosts a spirited tailgate on Regent Street. Fans can enjoy 20 craft beers on draft, refreshing cocktails and tailgate favorites like award-winning brats and sausages. The tailgate takes place in the parking lot under a tent if weather calls for it, with DJ Nick Nice spinning tunes to keep the energy high.

    The Red Zone
This spot combines indoor and outdoor tailgating with a full beer garden. Enjoy food and drink specials while catching the pregame hype with fellow fans.

    Jordan Big 10 Pub
Since 1999, Jordan’s has been a staple for Badger fans, entertaining more than 1,500 people on game days. Its massive outdoor beer garden on Regent Street makes it one of the top spots to tailgate before, during, and after the game.

    Game-Day Traditions

Want to look and feel like a true Badger fan? Learning the game-day traditions is the first step.

    • Jump Around: Few traditions are as iconic as Jump Around, the stadium-shaking anthem played at the end of the third quarter. Fans leap into the air together, creating a wave of energy that’s impossible to miss.
    • Varsity: A halftime tradition where the attendees put their arms around each other and sway side to side in song, a simple gesture that captures the spirit of Wisconsin game day (video).
    • On, Wisconsin!: The official fight song is sung after touchdowns and at the end of games, uniting fans in a chorus of Badger pride. Check out this performance at the Badger Bash tailgate!
    • Fifth Quarter – After the final whistle, the Wisconsin Marching Band continues to play, giving the stadium a lively send-off that keeps the energy alive. Sticking around for this tradition is also a smart way to avoid the largest crowds as they exit the stadium.
A woman in a red sweatshirt stands in a stadium, smiling and raising her hands in a "W" shape, celebrating UW Badger football with the crowd and game action visible in the background.

After a day full of Badger game-day excitement, Middleton’s nine hotels are ready to welcome you. Kick back, relax and recharge while reflecting on the fun, food and traditions you enjoyed. With comfort, convenience, and easy access to downtown and more than 80 dining spots and bars where you can keep the party going, staying in Middleton makes every game-day weekend even better.

Middleton’s CXC Outdoor Community Center Expands with Groundbreaking of Middleton Nordic Center https://visitmiddleton.com/middleton-nordic-center-groundbreaking/ Thu, 11 Sep 2025 16:35:41 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=32714
Logo for Middleton Nordic Center featuring overlapping orange, green, and blue shapes with a white wavy line, and the center's name written below.

Embracing every season is the Wisconsin way, and the City of Middleton will soon have one more wintery asset to welcome community members and visitors, alike.

The City of Middleton will celebrate a groundbreaking for Central Cross-Country Skiing’s new trailhead lodge — the Middleton Nordic Center — at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the CXC Outdoor Community Center (4355 Schwartz Road, Middleton). This event is open to the public.

Mayor Emily Kuhn will speak, as well as Bryan Gadow, city administrator; Yuriy Gusev, Central Cross-Country Skiing (CXC) director; and Steve Cohan, the chairman of the CXC Skiing Foundation.

The Middleton Nordic Center is the newest addition to this public-private partnership at the CXC Outdoor Community Center. It will contain a community lounge, restrooms, a physical therapy tenant, cross-country ski rental shop, CXC office space and CXC Athletic Center — a high-performance gym. There will also be an outdoor area available for larger events.

Rendering of a two-story outdoor community center with large windows, a wooden pergola, and balconies, with "COMING SOON" text above and a small site map in the bottom right corner.

“Middleton has always been a community that values its natural spaces and the opportunities they provide to gather, stay active and connect with one another,” said Mayor Emily Kuhn. “The Middleton Nordic Center is a perfect example of what happens when vision, generosity and partnership come together. This project not only preserves the beauty of the land, but also creates a lifelong legacy of recreation, wellness and community pride.”

Middleton has always welcomed cross-country skiers on designated trails at the Middleton Bike Park, but a land donation to the city by Dan and Natalie Erdman in 2021 started the proverbial snowball rolling for something bigger and better.

“My wife, Natalie, and I are thrilled to see the development of this unique outdoor recreational facility that will become a community asset to be enjoyed by the public for generations to come,” said Dan Erdman. “This is the result of a partnership between the City of Middleton and CXC, along with countless generous private donations without which this could never happen. We look forward to CXC creating a first-class cross-country skiing venue and offering the public year-round access to a trail system for their enjoyment and health, all within a stone’s throw from downtown Middleton.”

The Erdmans’ wish was that this land would never be developed commercially. It will stay open to the public for outdoor recreational use.

“When Dan expressed interest in donating land to build cross-country ski trails with snowmaking capabilities, I knew this could be an invaluable resource for our community,” said Gusev, who had been advocating to build this facility in Middleton for a decade. “The topography, the variety of the trails, and proximity to a large population area all make this site ideal for public use, not only for cross-country skiing but also for hiking or biking in the spring, summer and fall.”

The Middleton Nordic Center is scheduled to be complete and open by summer 2026, but the trails are already in use.

“The CXC Outdoor Community Center grounds already serve as a vibrant four-season hub for Nordic skiing, mountain biking and outdoor recreation,” said Steve Cohan, CXC Foundation president. “Thanks to the vision and contributions of many, the coming year will bring a new trailhead building, expanded snowmaking infrastructure, and targeted enhancements — transforming this site into a true regional destination where families connect, athletes train, and future Olympians take their first strides.”

    But nothing happens overnight.

The first trails were designed and built in 2021. Soon, a road was built, connecting Schwartz Road, and a 16-slot parking lot was added. In 2022, the City of Middleton added 48 more parking stalls.

The Middleton Parks and Recreation Department moved the Middleton Bike Park trailhead from Pleasant View Golf Course over to this parking lot and also built a new Pump Track at the location — both assets are managed by the City of Middleton and round out the four-season approach that the founders hoped for this space.

The CXC Outdoor Community Center grooms about eight miles of cross-country ski trails, including two miles with snowmaking infrastructure to supplement natural snow and ensure reliable snow coverage from December through March.

Fundraising is ongoing as the project plans expanded. The first lodge renderings were really a trailhead building with an office and ski rentals. But when donors came forward and added their own passion and dreams — the project evolved from a destination to that and more.

“The city has been a great partner for the CXC Foundation and overall center — the timelines have changed because donors stepped forward to add to the project,” Gusev said. “That’s the kind of ‘problem’ you dream about, people who are so invested that they want to make it even better.”

“This site is a unique competition venue for cross-country skiing,” he added. “And we have already hosted a couple high school state-level races, as well as local events. It’s a beautiful place to experience trails and outdoors, and a gift the cross-country skiing and outdoor enthusiasts truly appreciate.”

He went on to add that, with the new facility, he looks forward to hosting larger competitions and more events at the space, year-round.

And that was the type of opportunity that one of its first donors saw.

“We immediately saw the potential for visitors, from weekend getaways to corporate retreats, or more importantly, hosting large cross-country ski competitions,” said Mari Olson, director of tourism for Visit Middleton, the city’s tourism marketing department and one of the first donors to the project.

Visit Middleton has given tourism grants toward trail-making, trail signage, and finally toward the lodge, which came with naming rights. Olson said that the project has expanded over two directors and several tourism commissioners, and yet all agreed this location could be an amazing asset for tourism, as well as for residents.

“This view, this land, it’s absolutely beautiful from up here,” Olson said. “You know instinctively why Dan and Natalie (Erdman) wanted to preserve it this way; but it’s humbling as well, with how they want to share it with the community. This isn’t a simple gesture and it’s more than just a gift; it’s what legacies are meant to be made of.”

    A Pup’s Guide to a Middleton Weekend https://visitmiddleton.com/dog-filled-weekend/ Wed, 09 Jul 2025 19:11:03 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=30956

Traveling with your dog shouldn’t mean missing out — and in Middleton, it doesn’t have to. With dog-friendly trails, patios and shops, there are plenty of ways for your four-legged sidekick to be part of the adventure.

Start by grabbing breakfast. While (non-service) dogs are not allowed inside restaurants or other food establishments in Wisconsin, they are often welcome in outdoor seating areas in Middleton. To start the day on the right foot (or paw), visit one of Middleton’s many friendly dog patios.

Soak up the sun at one of Downtown Middleton's many coffee shops with your pup by your side. At Vitruvius grab a drink and a pastry from Madison Sourdough, then relax under their bright red umbrellas. Grace Coffee Co. offers a similar vibe, with fresh bakery items, great coffee and a fun touch — the owner’s dog, Diego, appears on every cup. They often set out water bowls for four-legged visitors, making it a favorite for dog lovers. Or swing by Barriques, where the patio is pup-friendly and the drinks are always worth the stop.

For a more relaxed breakfast experience, sit down and enjoy being waited on at Sofra Family Bistro or Hubbard Avenue Diner. Hubbard offers breakfast classics all day long, while Sofra’s delicious Albanian sausage, black cherry crepes and other goodies are available until it closes at 2 p.m. Outdoor seating is limited at both of these places, so plan accordingly.

    Paws on the Path

There are more than 30 parks in Middleton and 30 miles of multi-use trails are available to explore. As long as they’re on a leash, dogs are welcome on all trails in city parks and conservation areas.

Shaded by a canopy of native trees, the Pheasant Branch Creek Corridor trail is the perfect spot to cool off on a warm day. Let your pup splash along the optional trail that winds right through the creek for a fun, refreshing break. Keep following the path and you’ll arrive at Pheasant Branch Conservancy — 682 acres of open prairie, peaceful marshes and quiet forest, all ready for you and your four-legged explorer to discover.

A woman wearing sunglasses and a yellow shirt sits on a rock by a river with her black dog, ready to travel with dog in style. Trees and stepping stones surround them, making it the perfect day out near Middleton.

    Middleton Dog Parks

The MRD Dog Park is the perfect spot for dogs to run, play and socialize. This 3-acre, off-leash park features mowed trails, a fenced agility course, a shaded picnic shelter and even portable restrooms and waste stations for convenience. The full loop around the park spans approximately 0.7 miles and features flat, easy terrain with scenic views of the Pheasant Branch Conservancy.

Penni Klein Park is a 34-acre community park in northwestern Middleton with a six-acre fenced-in area that will allow Rover to, well, rove.

Both parks are open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., year-round and require a permit for entry — daily passes cost $8 and are available for purchase online and on-site.

    Retail Therapy

From treats to treasures, these stores welcome wagging tails

Middleton offers more than just walkable streets and charming storefronts — it’s also incredibly welcoming to four-legged shoppers. Start at the National Mustard Museum, where well-behaved leashed dogs are allowed inside. Friendly staff might even surprise your pup with a treat or two. Don’t forget to grab a Poupon U Pet Bag Dispenser, the perfect souvenir for your dog’s imaginary mustard degree.

Next, stop by Cloth & Metal Boutique, a sustainable and stylish clothing shop with handmade jewelry, handcrafted candles and plenty of love for pups. They keep dog treats on hand and often feature visiting pets on their Facebook page.

Finally, head to The Regal Find, a cozy, creative shop with handmade goods, local art, vintage finds and some pet accessories made by local artists. Here, your dog can become part of the community by joining the “Pet Friends of TRF” wall — a collection of Polaroid snapshots that celebrate their furry guests. And over in Greenway Station, Land’s End is also a self-proclaimed “paw-friendly” store.

    Marshall Boats

Looking for a fun way to cool off with your pup? Make a trip to Marshall Boats, where you can rent pontoons, paddleboards, canoes or kayaks and explore the beauty of Lake Mendota. Best of all, dogs are welcome aboard! Paddleboarding pups ride on durable, older BIC boards to help prevent scratches and tears and there is a $30 cleaning and maintenance fee for powerboats. Whether gliding across the water or soaking up the sun, it's the perfect lake day for you and your four-legged co-captain.

City of Middleton Draws $206.9 Million in Visitor Spending in 2024 https://visitmiddleton.com/2024-tourism-impact/ Thu, 19 Jun 2025 19:00:35 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=31426 The City of Middleton reports its third consecutive year of increased direct visitor spending since the end of the pandemic.

But tourism is more than a number — it’s part of a city’s growth story. And Middleton has shown growth in both visitor assets, as well as visitor spending.

According to the newest Tourism Economic Impact Report, Middleton welcomed increased visitor spending in 2024, totaling $206.9 million — the highest recorded and a 3.3 percent increase from 2023.

Compared to 2019, spending has increased by more than 17 percent, reflecting sustained momentum and growing interest in the city as a travel destination. The 2024 STR Report (short term rental) stated that the city’s 2024 occupancy rate was 8.3 percent higher than in 2023, and other tracking software employed by Visit Middleton, the city’s tourism department, showed the largest number of visitors outside of Dane County arrived from Milwaukee and Chicago.

“Middleton has always been considered a charming leisure destination, with its shopping districts, revitalized downtown, walkability, and of course, its impressive variety of restaurants,” said Mari Olson, Visit Middleton’s director of tourism. “What we are seeing these past couple of years, though, is a strong group tour showing and that is also a reflection of the attractions and things to do, as well as the quality of the hotel services.”

Middleton is home to more than 80 restaurants and diners, 50-plus stores and boutiques, and the longest running micro-craft brewery in the Midwest — Capital Brewery & Bier Garten, which also gives scheduled tours. The National Mustard Museum and National Mustard Day (Aug. 2, 2025) bring thousands to the city, and within the past few years a hard cider tasting room — Hidden Cave Cidery — has opened, adding yet another amenity to the list. In the last five years, two hotels have also been built, and three more fully renovated,

The city parks and trails have grown, as well, updating park services, the city pool, and extending city trails for hiking and biking. The cross-country ski trails, with their snow-making ability, have extended the winter sport through mid-March and provided the ability to host ski events.

“Middleton doesn’t have to try to be everything to everyone, it actually is,” Olson said. “Our city is in a rare position to offer this beautiful, safe, walkable community with all the amenities of a larger city. If you look to the west, you see Lake Mendota; and to the east are Pleasant View Golf Course and the cross-country ski trails; and more than 600 acres of protected prairie, wood and creek land in Pheasant Branch Conservancy lay north, with more than 300 acres actually within city limits. We have everything you could want in a leisure destination, as well as for the outdoor lover.”

She added that being next door to the state capital and Dane County Regional Airport provides visibility and accessibility, as does the fact that Middleton is within driving distance of Milwaukee and Chicago.

“The hospitality that visitors experience from their hotel room to sitting down for a fish fry provides an experience that keeps them returning,” Olson said. “We have something very special here. It’s easy to feel like a local, just walking around downtown and grabbing a coffee.

“I’m proud of the work we do in marketing Middleton; I’m proud of every hospitality employee and attraction. Honestly, once people see it, once they start exploring, Middleton sells itself.”

Bar chart showing Middleton's annual visitor spending from 2019 to 2024, broken down by lodging, food & beverage, retail, recreation/entertainment, and transportation.

This is reflected in the numbers from the Tourism Economic Report, which show that lodging led the way in 2024 with $60.5 million in spending, a 3.1 percent increase from the year prior. Food and beverage spending totaled $57 million (up 3.2 percent), followed by retail at $42.1 million (up 2.8 percent), recreation/entertainment at $24.7 million (up 5.5 percent) and transportation at $22.6 million (up 2.8 percent).

“We’re also grateful that the tourism and hospitality-related employment rate rose by 2.5 percent with an estimated 1,720 jobs in Middleton,” Olson added. “The hospitality industry is still rebounding from the pandemic, largely when it comes to workforce needs.”

Visitor spending in Middleton generated $69.3 million in state, local and Federal tax revenue, including $36.2 million in state and local taxes. The City of Middleton accrued more than $2,269,800 in just hotel tax revenue in 2024, of which the municipality keeps 30 percent, or about $680,900. The city uses these funds for programs, staffing and general maintenance for the city, while the remaining 70 percent is rolled back into tourism marketing and development.

Father’s Day is about more than gifts; it’s about making memories with the people who’ve guided, supported and shaped us. Whether you’re sharing a laugh at the National Mustard Museum, hitting the golf course or raising a glass together, Middleton offers plenty of ways to make the day meaningful.

    Tee Up a Great Day

Welcome to a golfer's paradise. Starting with Pleasant View Golf Course, this championship course features 27 holes of play, a par-3 executive course and panoramic views of the Middleton and Madison area. After enjoying a round, golfers can relax on the renovated patio or grab a bite at Goat Hill Grill, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For indoor practice or all-weather fun, X-Golf offers advanced simulators that track swing stats and help improve performance with a full-service bar just steps away, which also serves chicken wings, pizza, Milwaukee Giant Pretzels and more.

Need a last-minute gift? Stop by Golf Galaxy in Greenway Station for top gear and apparel from golf’s biggest brands.

A Day of Mustard and Memories

If Dad proudly holds the title of grill master, he’ll feel right at home at the National Mustard Museum. Head downstairs to explore more than 6,700 varieties of mustard and challenge him to a round of mustard ring toss. If he’s known for his "dad jokes," rest assured this attraction offers endless material with merch like a “Squeeze the Day, Carpe Dijon” T-shirt or an official Poupon U diploma. Also, check out the Stormin’ Sauce by Gorman Thomas, as well as BBQ sauce by Sprecher Brewery. Can’t celebrate in person? Send a Father’s Day Greeting Card Mustard to show your love and build excitement for a future visit.

Display of novelty items perfect for Dad, including a white bear plush, a yellow bucket with rolled papers, a “POUPON U” diploma price sign, and a framed “Couch Potato Authority” certificate—great for Father’s Day!.

Go Fish (Or Just Relax on the Water)

Whether Dad’s after a big catch or a laid-back cruise, Middleton has options. Launch your own boat at Marshall Park or rent a fishing pontoon from Marshall Boats, completely equipped with rod holders, storage and a fish finder. Want to kick back with a drink? Alcohol is only allowed on rentals with a captain, so book accordingly. A new kayak launch is also available at Lake Street Park.

Lakeview Park is a favorite for easy shoreline fishing, complete with two ADA-accessible piers and a great spot to teach the kids. Fishing is allowed in all city parks during regular hours — don’t forget to purchase or bring a Wisconsin fishing license.

A beige bench sits on a wooden dock overlooking a calm lake, with boats and docks visible on the right and trees in the distance under a partly cloudy sky.

    Raise a Glass to Dad

No celebration is complete without a drink at one of Middleton’s local favorites. With 40 years of award-winning brews, Capital Brewery & Bier Garten is the Midwest’s oldest continuously operating microbrewery. Spend the afternoon in the outdoor bier garten with live music from 3 to 6 p.m. on June 15, a food truck and a BOGO deal on dad’s first annual or seasonal beer.

    Spring Weekend https://visitmiddleton.com/spring-weekend/ Wed, 28 May 2025 18:37:17 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=30521

Soak up the fresh energy of spring, the warmth of the sun on your face and the colors returning to the landscape. Start your refreshing, joy-filled weekend.

After a peaceful night’s sleep in one of Middleton’s nine conveniently located hotels, you’ll wake up ready to embrace the best of spring.

Start your day on the north side with a visit to Prairie Café & Bakery or C’s Restaurant & Bakery — two unique restaurants that can only be found here. Settle in with a fresh cup of coffee and a homemade bakery item, or grab something from the display cases and head straight into the day’s adventures. Sit, sip and savor, or grab, go and get exploring. Either way, spring starts here.

    Get Outside

Middleton is home to more than 30 parks and green spaces, 30 miles of trails and the Middleton Bike Park stands out with its mix of scenery and excitement. The park features 4.5 miles of trails built for mountain biking but also open to walkers who follow guidelines and stay alert for riders. The newly opened pump track is available no matter the weather!

You don’t need to be a pro to enjoy the trails. The 1.2-mile Fairway Trail is a friendly introduction to off-road biking without sacrificing the fun. More experienced riders will find routes that challenge and reward with every turn.

To protect the trails, they close when conditions are too wet. Trail status is updated regularly on CorpTrails by local volunteer trail stewards who help keep the park in top shape.

Bike rentals are available from Playtri in Greenway Station (starting at $65/day). For electric or mountain bike options Trek Bikes just outside of Middleton (8108 Mineral Point Rd.) offers rentals for e-bikes ($75/day) and mountain bikes ($100/day).

    Pack a Picnic

After spending the winter cooped up, you might be looking for any excuse to get outside. Here’s a good one: Middleton is the perfect place for a picnic. The city is full of beautiful parks and green spaces — ideal settings for your next outdoor meal. There are plenty of local spots where you can pick up picnic essentials. View a list of ideal picnic spots here.

    Break Out Those Binoculars

Spring opens a window to the wonders of birding.

The call of Sandhill cranes can be heard across Middleton, marking the return of spring. Pheasant Branch Conservancy and other local ponds are hot spots for birdwatching during spring migration, offering plenty to see and hear.

Spot blue herons hunting in Confluence Pond for their next meal. Listen for the rattly call of a belted kingfisher while strolling the Graber Pond boardwalk. Watch for American white pelicans gliding across Tiedeman Pond. Or scan the treetops for the nesting pair of bald eagles that have called Pheasant Branch Conservancy home for several years. In spring they can often be seen soaring above the prairie or tending to their eggs. Track bird migration in real time through BirdCast or explore recent sightings on eBird to find your next birding “lifer.”

    Outdoor Eats

After a day outdoors, you’ve likely worked up an appetite. Middleton’s food scene features more than 80 restaurants and cafés to satisfy any craving. With patio season in full swing nearly half of these spots offer outdoor seating.

If spending the day at Pheasant Branch Conservancy1847 at the Stamm House is a historic tavern-turned modern-day Supper Club and is just steps from the creek corridor trail. Looking for Friday Night Fish Fries or a great Old Fashioned? Or enjoy live music at the bier garten at Capital Brewery — the longest running micro-craft brewery in the Midwest, where outside food is welcome. Keep an eye on their event calendar as weekends often feature live music and a lively crowd.

    Rainy Day Activities

Wisconsin is the perfect example of the saying, “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.” When the skies turn gray the city has plenty of indoor activities to keep the day going strong.

For golfers, X-Golf offers high-tech golf simulators featuring world-renowned courses. Each simulator tracks 12 different stats (like speed, launch angle and distance) so you can fine-tune your game before hitting the green at Pleasant View Golf Course.

The Kickback Bar is packed with more than 50 pinball machines and a variety of arcade games, making it a go-to rainy day hangout. It opens at 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and at 11 a.m. on weekends. The Kickback Bar and X-Golf both offer a full bar and a limited food menu.

Then there’s the unforgettable National Mustard Museum, home to more than 6,700 jars from around the globe. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits, gain knowledge by watching a show at the Mustard Piece Theatre and sample flavors at the complimentary tasting bar. It’s the kind of place that turns a rainy day into a trip highlight.

And that’s how you spend a spring weekend in and outdoors in Middleton. There are plenty more of the middle things to do during your next visit. We’ll see you soon!

Spring Weekend - Visit Middleton nonadult
    Veggie Delights https://visitmiddleton.com/veggie-delights/ Tue, 13 May 2025 18:53:37 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=30824

Vegetarians rejoice — the days of settling for a side salad are over. With more than 80 cafes and restaurants in Middleton, finding a few meatless options on a menu isn’t hard. But some places go above and beyond. Here are five standout restaurants that prioritize vegetarian, and often vegan, dining.

Since opening in 2024, Mishqui Peru has become a haven for diners with dietary restrictions, whether vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free. The restaurant quickly earned recognition for its exceptional meatless cuisine, taking second place in Madison’s Vegan Chef Challenge and winning “best value” for its affordable, plant-based menu. Of the 16 vegetarian options, nine are vegan, with a dedicated menu section highlighting dishes like plant-based chorizo empanadas, stir-frys, stews and pastas. A vegan-only fryer keeps many entrees gluten-free and Mishqui recently hinted that a vegan ceviche is in the works.

Dessert is worth saving room for, and the house-made tres leches is a standout. Vegans won’t miss out either, with vegan choices like sweet raspberry or guava empanadas, black forest cake or carrot cake. The menu also clearly labels dishes that are gluten, lactose or soy-free, along with vegan and vegetarian indicators.

Located in Downtown Middleton. Check operational hours, as they can change.

Hubbard Avenue Diner serves breakfast all day with plenty of options for vegetarians. Sweet breakfast classics like pancakes and French toast sit alongside savory choices such as huevos rancheros and the Popeye omelet. For lunch or dinner, the daily house-made soup often includes a vegetarian option and pasta dishes like mac and cheese or Mediterranean penne (skip the feta to make it vegan) are always comforting picks. Salads and sandwiches round out the menu, including a vegetarian-friendly take on a Reuben. Called “The Sheldon,” this sandwich features grilled strips of marinated tofu, tomato, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese (remove cheese for vegan).

Diners can also skip right to dessert; Hubbard is known for pie. While all the pies are vegetarian, several fruit pies, including apple, strawberry-rhubarb and cherry, are vegan. The diner also features three monthly pie specials, one of which is almost always vegan.

Hubbard is located on Hubbard Avenue, downtown. Open daily, check holiday schedule.

For those who like a little heat, five of these come with a kick, including garlic eggplant and several tofu dishes. The restaurant’s family-style dining makes it a great spot to bring friends and share a variety of flavors, while the elegantly decorated space offers a casual yet refined dining experience.

New to the Middleton food scene, Thalaivar has quickly earned rave reviews. With an expansive menu of more than 140 options of both South Indian and Chinese favorites, the restaurant offers a wide variety of vegetarian choices. Featured on their own dedicated page, there are 13 vegetarian curries alone! Kick off your meal with one of nine veggie appetizers or a crispy, made-to-order dosa. A popular pick is the malai kofta, a curried vegetarian dish with fried potato balls and paneer. Those seeking vegan options can contact the restaurant directly for recommendations.

    Green Guide to Middleton https://visitmiddleton.com/green-guide/ Mon, 21 Apr 2025 21:16:37 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=30500

There’s no doubt about it, sustainability matters to Middleton. We treat every day like it’s Earth Day, but April provides the perfect opportunity to highlight how the “Good Neighbor City” values the planet.

From eco-friendly buildings and clean transit options to locally sourced food and bold citywide initiatives, every corner of this community reflects a commitment to a greener future. Whether you’re visiting for the weekend or planting roots, Middleton makes it easy to travel more sustainably.

    Sustainable Eats

    Longtable Beer Cafe

Local sourcing shapes every plate at Longtable Beer Cafe. The restaurant partners with dozens of local purveyors to showcase what the region does best. Start with the soft pretzel — a local favorite. Clasen’s European Bakery bakes it fresh, and the house beer mustard comes from the National Mustard Museum, just down the street. It’s local flavor, literally side by side.

    Hidden Cave Cidery

At Hidden Cave Cidery, every glass tells a Wisconsin story. The cider is made exclusively with apples grown in the state, picked from Wisconsin orchards and pressed in small batches. Owner Walker Fanning keeps things seasonal, adjusting the apple blend based on what’s fresh and in harvest. Local honey from Mount Horeb adds a touch of sweetness to some varieties, giving each pour a connection to the land — and the people — who make it all possible.

    Willy St. Co-op West

For a quick, sustainable bite, head to Willy Street Co-op West. The hot bar rotates daily, and the deli and bakery serve up fresh options perfect for eating on the go. In 2024 alone, composting efforts across the Co-op’s three Dane County locations kept over 260,000 pounds of waste out of the landfill. The Middleton store features a public EV charging station, low-flow fixtures, and energy-efficient equipment, and it uses 25% less energy than a typical grocery store. No membership is required to shop.

    Greenway Station Farmers Market

It doesn’t get more farm fresh than this. The Middleton Farmers Market runs every Thursday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. (May 1 through Oct. 1) at Greenway Station. More than a dozen local vendors offer everything from fresh vegetables and cheese curds to jams and baked goods. Seasonal eating cuts down on transportation emissions and keeps your meals aligned with the season.

    Sustainable Transportation

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, transportation accounts for 28% of greenhouse gas emissions. While transportation isn’t something that the average person can completely eliminate from their life, several options in Middleton make it easier to lower your carbon footprint.

    Biking

Explore Middleton by bike using a network of on-street lanes, scenic paved paths, and four miles of trails in a dedicated bike park. One popular route winds along the Pheasant Branch Creek Corridor Trail — a 1.37-mile paved, two-lane path that follows the creek through a natural conservancy area. An interactive bicycle map is available online, or pick up a printed version at the Middleton Visitor Center.

No bike? No problem. Playtri in Greenway Station rents bikes starting at $65 per day. For electric or mountain bike options, Trek Bikes just outside of Middleton (8108 Mineral Point Rd.) offers e-bike rentals for $75 per day and mountain bikes for $100.

    Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging

Middleton supports electric vehicle use with seven public charging stations conveniently located across the city. Charging while exploring the area is simple, and an interactive map shows all station locations and charger types.

    Ride Share

Looking for a ride that’s both convenient and climate-conscious? Uber makes it easy to choose an electric vehicle with its Uber Green option. Just enter your destination, then tap to request an EV. It’s often the same or cheaper price than a standard ride. Uber has committed to a 100% zero-emissions fleet by 2040, and every electric ride helps move things in that direction.

A person wearing a helmet rides a bicycle on a shaded dirt trail surrounded by green trees and yellow wildflowers.

    Bus

Middleton is part of the Metro Transit bus system, served primarily by routes F and R2. Single rides cost $2, with day passes available for $5. A third of Metro’s buses are fully electric, saving an estimated 250,000 gallons of diesel annually. Plan a trip, view bus schedules, and track real-time locations using the Metro Transit website or app.

    Sustainable Shopping

Buying secondhand keeps items out of landfills and reduces the need for new resources. Check out these secondhand shops in Middleton:

    • Yada Fair Trade and Resale – Shop gently used clothing, furniture, household items, and fair-trade artisan goods. Store profits support Yada's mission to empower women affected by trafficking.
    • Simply Savvy – A luxury consignment store offering stylish secondhand furniture, home décor, clothing, and more.
    • Goodwill – A long time leader in reuse and waste reduction, with more than 120 years of giving items a second life.
A man and woman walk together on a sidewalk outside a building with outdoor seating and blue umbrellas on a sunny day.

    Sustainable Attractions

    Capital Brewery and Bier Garten

Capital Brewery follows a simple yet powerful philosophy: “Do what’s right. Seek out every improvement. For the customer. The community. The world around us,” according to its website. Sustainability touches every part of the operation. The brewery has replaced its boiler, upgraded its refrigeration system, and installed a new kegging machine with a water recovery feature that is then repurposed to clean used kegs. Even the brewing process has changed. Producing one pint of beer now takes just 7 pints of water, down from 12. The brewing process produces nearly 1 million pounds of spent grain per year. Their solution? Capital Brewery works with a local farmer who uses that grain to feed their herd of cattle.

A man in work clothes operates controls on large stainless steel tanks in an industrial facility, likely a brewery or processing plant.

    Holy Wisdom Monastery

Holy Wisdom Monastery centers its mission around environmental stewardship. This LEED Platinum-certified building features a 300 kW solar array and uses geothermal energy. As of 2025, the monastery has reached net-zero status, producing all of its energy onsite from renewable sources, the first retreat center in Wisconsin to do so. For 70 years, the Benedictine Sisters have cared for 130 acres of land, restoring prairie and savanna areas, woodlands, gardens, orchards, nature trails, and a nine-acre lake once buried by sediment from nearby farms and residential development. Visitors are welcome to explore the trails and see this conservation work firsthand.

City of Middleton: Leading by Example

Middleton isn’t just talking about sustainability — it’s on the forefront of change. Residents here made Middleton the first city in the nation to pass a referendum encouraging the use of a carbon fee to fight climate change. The sustainable mindset that is commonplace in the community is what helped the city earn LEED Gold certification in 2023 — the first municipality in Wisconsin to achieve this distinction (learn more here).

In 2024, Middleton kept the momentum going. The city planted 215 new trees, adopted a sustainable purchasing policy, and began building out expanded EV charging infrastructure. It also upgraded 27 affordable housing units, boosting energy efficiency while cutting utility costs for tenants.

Earth Day began 55 years ago in 1970, thanks to Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson. He envisioned more than clean air, water and natural beauty; he called for “an environment of decency, quality, and mutual respect for all other human beings and all other living creatures.” That vision lives on today in Middleton, where sustainability is more than a goal, it’s a way of life.

Four glasses of white wine are arranged on a wooden table, each labeled with a different wine name.

While Grape Water Wine Bar doesn’t offer traditional wine flights, the fun and easy self-service system lets guests create their own. This unique system allows visitors to try any of the 16 wine options before committing to a full glass of their favorite.

Flights feature six tasting-sized beers, with more than a dozen options available (see what's currently on tap). Choose from year-round classics like Mutiny IPA, Supper Club Lager, Wisconsin Amber, and Sticky Paw Blonde Ale or explore seasonal brews, limited-edition small batches, stouts, sours, shandies and more.

If looking for guidance, we recommend starting with Capital Brewery’s most award-winning beer — Munich Dark, a traditional European Dunkel lager with dark caramel malt flavors and a smooth, dry finish. The real challenge? Deciding on the other five beers.

Hidden Cave Cidery offers an excellent way to explore the diverse world of hard ciders with its $15 cider flights, where guests can select four locally made ciders to sample. The cidery provides an online list of what’s currently on tap, but it’s also worth following their social media for updates on innovative and limited-edition batches in the works, like the delicious strawberry lime smoothie made with blended strawberries, freshly hand-squeezed limes, Wisconsin honey and cider. The cidery’s patio is open for the season, offering the perfect spot to enjoy a crisp apple cider while attending outdoor music nights and food truck events (see event calendar). What makes it even better is that well-trained, leashed dogs can join as drinking buddies. Owner and cider maker Walker Fanning often works behind the bar, eager to share his knowledge of the cider-making process and provide personalized suggestions for finding the perfect cider for every visitor.

Four small glass jars containing juices labeled tart, pear, cherry, and peach, placed on a rectangular tray on a wicker table.

Starting with a classic mimosa made with fresh-squeezed orange juice, the flight then ventures into unique flavors like mango, sweet hibiscus and vanilla peach.

Brighten Winter Days: Five Vibrant Spots to Inspire You Until Spring https://visitmiddleton.com/brighten/ Thu, 13 Mar 2025 18:11:52 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=29793

Spring is just around the corner. While eagerly awaiting its arrival, plenty of places in Middleton will bring a burst of color, warmth, and energy into the final days of winter. From sunny spots filled with natural light to vibrant murals and lush greenery, these five spots will help visitors stay inspired and excited as we start the countdown until spring.

The National Mustard Museum is the perfect place to put a smile on any visitor's face. With over 6,700 types of mustard from around the world and walls painted in cheerful yellow, this vibrant museum instantly brings warmth and joy. Visitors can explore mustard on the big screen at the Mustardpiece Theatre, test their newfound knowledge with an interactive food quiz, enjoy unique activities like the mustard ring toss, and find the perfect mustard to kick off the upcoming cookout season at the tasting bar upstairs. Best of all, admission is completely FREE!

Return on Saturday, Aug. 2, for an epic summer celebration of National Mustard Day. At this annual event, the museum "paints the town yellow" with live music, games, and, of course, plenty of mustard.

A woman and a boy are playing and jumping inside a brightly lit, yellow-themed room decorated with mustard bottles and a wall display of large mustard containers.

Grace Coffee Co. is a lively and welcoming space surrounded by large windows that let in plenty of natural light and tall houseplants that add a touch of greenery. It's the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and a freshly baked treat while working or meeting a friend. Colorful hand-painted murals by local artist Julie Vornholt adorn the white walls, creating a lush, nature-inspired environment through her artwork. Julie's freehand approach lets the murals evolve organically, giving a unique, natural flow that complements the cozy ambiance of the space. Julie is also the talented artist behind several murals on the Middleton Outdoor Art Trail, a fantastic option to explore on days with the first hints of early spring.

People seated at tables and bar stools in a modern café with large windows and decorative lighting.

With state-of-the-art golf simulators, X-Golf allows players to experience green fairways year-round, regardless of weather. The simulators track detailed stats — launch angle, club speed, and more — helping improve skills and maintain an edge throughout the season. This ensures that when stepping onto the award-winning Pleasant View Golf Course in April, players can leave competitors in the dust (or bunker). With space for up to 130 guests and a full bar, X-Golf is the ideal spot to gather with friends or unwind after a round. Join a tournament or book tee-times.

A man and woman sit on a green couch with drinks, surrounded by people. A golf bag and table with snacks are in the foreground.

At The Bruce Company, it’s always spring. Since 1952, this year-round garden center has been a local favorite for vibrant greenery. The expansive nursery offers everything from popular houseplants to rare finds, perfect for bringing a touch of spring indoors and adding color to any space. New to plants? The knowledgeable staff are always available to provide expert guidance on selecting the right plant and help navigate the area’s largest selection. Whether searching for pet-friendly options, plants that thrive in low light, or hardy varieties that can handle anything, The Bruce Company has it all.

Throughout the year, the garden center hosts various events where visitors can get their hands in the dirt at workshops such as making DIY succulent gardens or creating terrariums.

Don’t let those pickleball paddles gather dust. There’s no need to wait for outside courts to open when Hitters Sportsplex is right here in Middleton. Unlike tennis, the sportsplex does not require a membership to play pickleball.

Open play is available 2 – 4 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, 4 – 6 p.m. and 8 – 10 p.m. on Friday, and noon – 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. One-time play costs $15, and players can sign up via the Playtime Scheduler Website. Hitters Sportsplex also has private and group pickleball lessons for those looking to learn the game.

As winter continues the search for a change of scenery or a place to unwind becomes more appealing. Luckily, Middleton offers the perfect solution with nine hotels that are all located less than 10 minutes from the vibrant spots mentioned above. Each hotel features a pool where guests can escape winter chills, and several have hot tubs (Holiday Inn Express & Suites, Staybridge Suites, Country Inn & Suites). These hotels provide the ideal base for enjoying all the warmth and brightness Middleton has to offer, making it easy to embrace the season and look forward to spring.

Sofra Family Bistro’s Albanian Wedding Soup has been delighting locals for more than 19 years. Known for authentic Albanian-American dishes, Sofra offers a warm, family-friendly atmosphere perfect for enjoying comforting meals. The Albanian Wedding Soup is a standout, with a flavorful combination of whole milk yogurt, fresh mint, angel hair pasta, garlic, and a splash of lemon juice, all enriched with heavy cream. It’s just one of Sofra's rotating soups — others like French onion and chicken wild rice (both are also house-made) are also worth trying, but the wedding soup is a unique crowd favorite.

    Sober Sips: Top Places for Non-Alcoholic Drinks in Middleton https://visitmiddleton.com/sober-sips/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 00:37:34 +0000 https://visitmiddleton.com/?p=29104

Looking for a great place to enjoy non-alcoholic drinks in Middleton? If you're taking a break from alcohol or simply prefer a refreshing alternative, the city has plenty of spots offering creative and flavorful NA options. You’ll find at least one NA beer on the drink menu at Free House Pub, Capital Brewery, Nitty Gritty, Taza, and The Village Green, while Pasqual’s serves up Virgin Margaritas and Bloody Marys. Below are some of the hotspots with a variety of non-alcoholic options to choose from.

Greenway Station's newest dining gem, Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant, is making waves with more than 60 of its own expertly crafted wines. To celebrate Dry January, they’ve debuted their first non-alcoholic offering: Vivanté. This bubbly blanc is made from fresh, unfermented grape juice, with a touch of citrus, fruits, and teas, creating a wine-like complexity. Think of it as a zesty sangria with vibrant notes of lime, green apple, grapefruit, and a tangy lemon finish. Enjoy the flavors of wine — without the alcohol!

Craftsman Table & Tap has been serving delicious cocktails since 2012, featuring one of the city's most extensive non-alcoholic selections. Their offerings include four canned NA beers: Alethic Free Wave Hazy IPA, a lime cerveza lager, and two locally brewed options — Wisconsin Brewing Co.'s Harley Davidson Road Kin Pilsner from Verona and Untitled Art's Mango Fruit Sour from Waunakee. If in the mood for a mocktail, choose from five non-alcoholic cocktails priced $6 - $10, including the Blackberry Bramble Spritzer, Punch Drunk Raspberry Nojito, Blackberry Mockarita, or even a dry twist on a Wisconsin classic with the Lyre's Old Fashioned. Pair any of these sober sips with their award-winning cheese curds.

Grape Water Wine Bar provides a fun and cozy atmosphere where owner Nicki aims to "unsnob the wine bar one glass at a time." This includes ensuring non-drinkers feel welcome with options like Lyre’s Amalfi Spritz, a variety of Mingle Mocktails, NA Heineken and Athletic Brewing Co. Lite beer, and even Newblood’s NA Red Blend (available by the bottle). During Dry January, celebrate at Grape Water with an NA version of their popular Vino Bingo nights.

Five colorful beverage cans, including one Lyre's Amalfi Spritz and four Mingle mocktails, are lined up on a wooden surface with a soft-focus background.

After a fun day of shopping at Greenway Station, swing by Biaggi’s for a refreshing drink and a burst of flavor. For about $5, you can sip on a cool Cucumber Mint or Strawberry Lemonade, Rosso Spritz, Pesco Fresco, or one of many mouthwatering Italian cream soda flavors. This lively Italian spot serves delicious, affordable classics in a cozy, laid-back setting — perfect for unwinding after a day of retail therapy!

Longtable Beer Cafe in Downtown Middleton has an impressive selection of more than 300 bottled beers and 12 rotating taps, including several non-alcoholic options. Among the locally brewed NA choices from Waunakee’s Untitled Art, you'll find dry options like Dragonfruit Sour, Citra Session Pale Ale, Orange Peel Wit, and Smores Dark Brew Porter. During Dry January, don’t miss the NA Juicy IPA on tap. For a different option, you can try Potosi’s Golden Brew Lager, Athletic Brewing Company’s Free Wave Hazy IPA, or Atlética Lager. While there, indulge in crispy frites with handmade dipping sauces like malt vinegar aioli or curry ketchup. Taps rotate regularly; check out their website to see current availability.

The Kickback Bar, an arcade bar in the new Middleton Market, showcases a selection of NA "Clear Headed Cocktails," priced at $7 - $8 and perfect for sipping while enjoying an impressive collection of more than 50 pinball machines. Cool off from an intense game of skeeball with the Blackberry Mint Collins, made with Fair State Hop Water, blackberry mint syrup, and lime, or The Cami, a citrusy mix of orange, cranberry, pineapple, and grapefruit soda. For coffee lovers, Coffee Talk combines Let it Ride iced coffee, chai syrup, and cream. The Credit Union blends apricot syrup, lemon, and press for a flavorful twist. Whether aiming for high scores or just relaxing with friends, these creative drinks make the perfect companion to a fun-filled arcade experience.

Located near Greenway Station and several Middleton hotels, Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse has non-alcoholic wines from California, including a Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. For a replenishing mocktail experience, try a Basil Mango or Blueberry Mint Refresh. Pair any of these drinks with delicious steaks, chops, seafood, and Italian specialties for a truly satisfying meal.

Villa Dolce is a local favorite in Downtown Middleton, known for its artisan pizza and gelato that also offers a variety of unique mocktails priced $6 - $9, that are sure to impress. Try the Toucan Sam, a soothing blend of pomegranate and orange juice with soda and lime. For something more complex, the Tongue & Cheek combines Seedlip Grove 41 (a non-alcoholic spirit with a citrus gin flavor) with ginger ale, blood orange, and lemon. Experience a taste of Italy with A'Siciliana Limonata Soda, a lightly carbonated beverage crafted from freshly squeezed lemons, offering a crisp finish.

If searching for the perfect non-alcoholic drink for home, look no further than Sober Social. Open since fall 2024, it’s Wisconsin’s first non-alcoholic bottle shop, designed to bridge the gap between sobriety and social life. The shop has a thoughtfully curated selection of NA beers, wines, and spirits, with many options available for tasting. Not sure where to begin? Their friendly, knowledgeable staff is always on hand to offer guidance and make personalized recommendations.
